The Soca River (above) is one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. Composed primarily of limestone, this freestone alpine jewel is home to the Marble Trout, the largest stream-dwelling trout in the world!

Fly Fishing Slovenia - The Rivers

While Slovenia is a very small country, there are too many rivers to fish in one visit! So we've decided to guide just a handfull of the rivers that we believe have the best fishing, are the most scenic and offer the best overall experience. View a slideshow of the rivers: Quicktime or Windows

The Soca River (above) is the primary river we guide in Slovenia. Most fishermen are spellbound when the see the color of this amazing free-stone river. The river is full of European Grayling, Marble Trout and Trohpy Rainbow Trout that grow to 30 inches in length. The extremely clear waters of the Soca translate to difficult fishing for all species. The majority of the time anglers work hard for each and every fish - but there are also times when the fishing is very easy. Last fall we encountered a tremendous Mayfly hatch that accounted for some of the most amazing dry fly fishing any of us had ever seen. I could tell you about the action, but you have to see it to believe it. Watch video of the hatch: Quicktime or Windows.

The Sava Bohinka is a midsize river with a more gradual flow and characterized by long expanses of shallower waters that dump into deep runs and pools. The Sava Bohinka is relatively easy to wade and easy to fish. The river contains Brown Trout, Grayling, trophy Rainbow Trout and the GIANT Hucho Hucho (left). Like the Soca, the Sava Bohinka is a "must fish" while you are in Slovenia. While Hucho Hucho fishing is dependent of weather and season, fishing for the trophy Rainbow Trout on this river is excellent and exciting. We suggest fishing this river for at least two days while you are in Slovenia. Watch video of Hucho: Quicktime or Windows.

The Unica (right) is a chalk stream found in the south-central region of the country, known as the Karst Region. The region is well known for its intricate network of caves, great wines and air-cured hams (prosciutto). The Unica River, like many in the region, flows out of a cave - meanders through the forests and pasture lands - then dissapears back into the earth. The river is full of Grayling and Brown Trout. The slues and backedies are teaming with Northern Pike and Carp.

Fishing the Unica can be VERY challening and is therefore not recommended for all anglers. Some sections of the river are designated "dry fly only" and can pose some of the most difficult, but rewarding, fly fishing we have found anywhere. In May there is a Mayfly (Danica) hatch on the river that rivals any in the world. Large yellow/white Mayflies (size 8 or larger) hatch in such large numbers that they are sometimes collected and shoveled into pens to feed chickens and pigs! If you hit this hatch right expect to witness some of the best dry fly fishing in Slovenia. While the majority of the fish are not huge there is something special about catching Brown Trout in their native waters. While fishing the Unica can be very rewarding, we would like to stress that this is a difficult river and we only recommend it to the highly accomplished angler! The Krka River (right) is very similar to the Unica. The river is full of very large Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Grayling, but is a spring creek and can be very difficult to fish. We recommend this river to very skilled anglers looking for challenging, yet rewarding fishing.
